Flesh and bones
X-ray scans to measure muscle and fat tissue in older adults, some after weight loss surgery.
The image displays a selection of Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans from a group of research participants. The scans are used to measure the amount of muscle tissue, particularly in the arms and the legs. This is subsequently used as part of the diagnosis of sarcopenia – a decline in muscle size and strength.
The differences in body sizes, shapes, composition and even the visible joint replacements on the images each tells a story of the person’s ageing journey.
