First of the webinar series, AGePOP presents:

Patient-centric drug development to ease medication management for older adults – closing current knowledge gaps.

Older adults are often confronted with complex medication management as multimorbidity and thus the intake of multiple medications are common within this vulnerable patient population. Patient-centric drug development has the potential to reduce the complexity of medication management and thus increase patients’ adherence. Therefore, a thorough understanding of the needs of the main group of medication users, their acceptability of various dosage forms, and the real-life intake conditions is inevitable. To close one of the existing knowledge gaps, an intervention study evaluating the influence of solid oral dosage form characteristics on swallowability, visual perception, and handling in older adults was performed. The study provides tablet size limits in respect to deglutition capabilities, visual perception, and handling. Further, the study informs about preferences in tablet shapes as well as about the visual perception of capsules and mini tablets compared to monolithic tablets. The importance of considering the age and the general health status of the target patient population allowing for successful patient-centric drug development was highlighted by comparing data of older and younger adults.
